Murfreesboro Home Was Moved by Bulls

The Old Holmes Place in Murfreesboro sits on the street leading you to Oaklands Mansion on Maney Avenue. Oaklands is full of history, but this old house has a story of its own.

The home was built off-site around 1845. Captain Richard Beard of the 24th Tennessee purchased the lot it sits on today and had a bull team skid the front rooms to this location. Beard was a lawyer by profession and fought in both the Battle of Stones River and the Battle of Chickamauga.

In 1880, two more rooms and the fancy front porch were added. During World War II, the house was turned into a duplex to provide housing for airmen and their families from Sewart Airforce Base. It was restored back to a single residence in the 1980s.
